The Artist
David Lewis was born and raised in suburban Detroit. He loves The Detroit Tigers, Vernor's Ginger Ale, and Detroit-style Coney Island Hot Dogs.
After his freshman year at Eastern Michigan University (right down the street from The University of Michigan!), he started his advertising career with a summer job in the mailroom of W.B. Doner & Company Advertising. The summer before his senior year, they let David try his hand at copywriting... his dream job!
The first commercial he ever wrote, a radio spot for THE DETROIT NEWS, went on to win an award. He became known as "The Award Winning Mailboy".
Upon graduation, there was a job waiting for him... and off he went.
Years later, while at Campbell-Ewald Advertising... David created a joke that was popular at the time... based on the unknown "star" of some national hair products commercials. He started "The Rula Lenska Fan Club". It was such a hit, it was featured in TIME Magazine, PEOPLE, US, NEWSWEEK, and newspapers across the country and in Europe. David was featured on dozens of radio shows and appeared, along with Rula, as guests on THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW.
David's career took him to Chicago for jobs at Leo Burnett Advertising... where he wrote commercials for Ronald McDonald, Kellogg's, Keebler, and others... and later Needham, Harper & Steers (later called DDB Needham and finally DDB)... where he worked primarily on Bud Light and Busch Gardens. His work on Bud Light radio garnered numerous awards, and landed him a job in Los Angeles at the world's leading comedy radio advertising boutique, Bert, Barz & Kirby... where he wrote, directed, and produced hundreds of comedic radio spots for clients and agencies worldwide.
Homesick for Chicago and his beloved DDB, David returned and was soon promoted to VP/Creative Director. But, after a couple years... he realized how much he missed his radio work, so he opened his own comedy radio boutique in Chicago, David Lewis Creative Radio. Their success led to an additional business, VOX:Chicago Voicecasting.
Both had quite a run... with David finally announcing his retirement from the ad business in December of 2020.
He lives in his man-cave loft in Chicago's scenic West Loop... and loves his Chicago Bears, Diet Snapple Half & Half, and Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. And, he's looking forward to returning to his usual table at Manny's post-pandemic.
